Anne was born in Frankfurt am Main on June 12th 1929; In 1933 her family fled Germany and settled in Amsterdam, when Hitler came to power. The Nazis invaded Holland in 1942 and, when they began deporting Dutch Jews to concentration camps, she and her family went into hiding in an annex behind the offices on Prinsengracht Canal where her father had worked. Anne's parents had given her a red and white plaid diary on her 13th birthday, which she started writing in immediately and her last diary entry was made on August 1st 1944. She and her family were captured on August 3rd and sent to Bergen Belsen where she died of typhus in March 1945, a few weeks before the camp was liberated. The Nazis missed finding her diary, which was published in Dutch in 1947 as The House Behind and in 1953 was published in English as The Diary of a Young Girl.
In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.
